There have been so many good tunes coming out; I found myself constantly removing/adding songs to Vol. XIV. "Crossed Out" features a pair of firsts to Family Knux: the first Drum & Bass [Andain - Much Too Much (Rido Remix)] and Moombahton [Fire for Effect - The Beach (Ultra Demon Remix)] songs. We welcome back Crystal Fighters w/a jump-y remix of their track, a haunting Dubstep remix of Niki & the Dove, and a tropical feel-good remix from Viceroy. Be prepared to wind down at the middle of this mix b/c Araabmuzik, Submerse and The Bullitts will make you want to quit your job and sit at the edge of the ocean for the rest of your days. I'm a sucker for steel drums, so I had to add Polarsets' remix of Mausi. I'm not too big on mash-ups but Madeon kills it w/this thirty-nine-track banger — See how many tunes you can name.

Contrary to the last mixtape this one's almost full of originals (I'm using "original" loosely here, as you'll probably recognize lots of samples). I've been listening to a lot of hip hop and R&B inspired stuff, which you'll find in the soulful second track from Letherette, followed by a throwback, Perseus' lush "Running Back To You" featuring some decade-old Ashanti vocals, Hackman's romantic post-dub track featuring a low-pitch Alicia Keys refrain, a garage-y remix of '90s hit "Tell Me," and if there's any kind of dubstep I listen to it's the kind Girl Unit makes. And between all of that you'll find my recent indie faves.
A few years ago we started trading mixtapes as a fun way to share new (or old) songs that we thought our brother-from-another-mother (or sister-from-another-mister) might enjoy. It began with a simple set of parameters — 10 tracks and a title — and quickly* became this little site where we can share with the world the mixtapes we've shared with each other.
* This site was completed in under 24 hours on a chilly, winter evening warmed by the glows of our computers.

Jackie is an interaction designer living and working in the Bay Area, often at the side of a cat who think's he's a dog, her best friend, and her favorite things: design, music and food. She created Family Knux as a place where she can give you two out of three. Maybe one day you'll get all three. Hmm.
