It’s been a little quiet lately but trust me when I say I’ve been hard at work picking out some really great tunes! “Hearts” features more R&B—Snakehips, Liz, and more—than my previous mixes. Along with pretty vocals you’ll hear in “Hearts” a different side of today’s Trap, a side with more melody and less machine-gun audio samples. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the “ ‘hood” sounds but it’s nice to take a break. Remember that bounce-y House tune from Duke Dumont a few months ago? If you liked that one, you’ll definitely get down with Amtrac’s “Those Days.” Ryan Hemsworth has been killin’ it lately with his productions, and his collab’ with Angel Haze is nothing short than great. Haze’s lyrics, though powerful, sound so sad and broken. What can I say? I’m a sucker for sad lyrics.

Do you remember Patricia Arquette's opening monologue from True Romance? It was about young, fiery, runaway love that prevails no matter how much destruction. These tracks encompass the breadth of these young lover's tribulations. #youngluv - a funky opener from FKJ, Ryan Hemsworth's vulnerable remix of Mikky Ekko, and an anthemic song from TOKiMONSTA championing heroism in love. #xxx - "In Need," Mariah, RL Grime's too-hungover-or-tired-for-heavy-trap-shit Shlohmo remix, and my favorite on this mix rounds out the group, "Back It Up," because duh. And lastly, #heartbreak - a heartfelt, earnest version of “Gold Dayzz,” and a tear-jerking closer from Andrea.
A few years ago we started trading mixtapes as a fun way to share new (or old) songs that we thought our brother-from-another-mother (or sister-from-another-mister) might enjoy. It began with a simple set of parameters — 10 tracks and a title — and quickly* became this little site where we can share with the world the mixtapes we've shared with each other.
* This site was completed in under 24 hours on a chilly, winter evening warmed by the glows of our computers.
